Excellent piece. This conflict has been very difficult to analyze from a class conflict point of view. While it portends a defeat for American imperialism (always a good thing) it does contain some ambiguities. Both Xi and Putin are essentially leaders of counter-revolutionary capitalist regimes who clearly have no plans to help emancipate the working class. Putin in particular has put forward somewhat retrograde views on some cultural issues which have undoubtedly alienated some (if not most) in western leftist circles. Thus it is not totallylly straightforward. That being said what this conflict has unfortunately demonstrated is the extreme ideological weakness of the western left.Even with the caveats previously mentioned there is absolutely no excuse for the positions in support of the American imperialist project taken by large swathes of the left. This displays a complete lack of understanding of how capitalism and imperialism actually work.I think it also betrays a level of Russophobia bordering on the racist. In any case I always appreciate your work and thank you for this contribution.
Thank you David. There is a difference as you have identified between recognising who the perpetrators of this conflict are and supporting Xi and Putin politically. My position is clear, while both leaders and the governments they represent are fundamentally anti-working class, this should not be confused with the reality that world peace is in their interest, while world war is in the interest of the declining USA. The banning of Micron by China takes us a step closer to war because it demonstrates that US embargoes have not crushed China’s technical developments but only delayed them. This is the red line for Washington.
