“No, we opposed it for one reason and one reason only; we oppose the centrifugal forces which erupt from economic crises and the disintegration that arises from it. In turn disintegration always unleashes reactionary forces that drive wedges between the workers of the world.”
That’s an abstraction that cannot be applied to concrete circumstances. The issue isn’t “integration” of capitalisms vs. disintegration of capitalisms. That would lead you to opposing a government withdrawing from the IMF or the World Bank, or taking the most “dis-integrative” action available to it– repudiating its international debt.
You might as well argue that workers in Mexico, Canada, the US, should advocate for the “integration” brought about by NAFTA.
Certainly, no one can argue that Greece remaining in the EU is “progressive,” “integrative,” and that leaving the EU would have been “reactionary,” disintegrative.
That does not mean that the “solution” for Greek workers was in leaving the EU, but it is certainly the case, that the bourgeoisie in Greece, and capitalism in Greece could not and cannot survive without the weight of its “integration” into the EU.
Certainly opposition to bourgeois alliances requires clarity regard that opposition, and ensuring none of the opposition drifts into chauvinism of any sort, but opposition to “bourgeois integration” given what that integration means for workers– strengthening of capitalism, unleashing of ever greater centrifugal forces, more violent forms of oppression– is fundamental to class struggle.
The issue is never “integration” when the integration is that of the alliance of capitalists. It’s a question of class struggle. The “Leave” campaign was specifically intended to obscure class struggle, to deflect it into racism and chauvinism. The “Remain” position offered nothing that could enhance the power of the working class, as the case of Greece so clearly showed.
