CHANGES TO THE MASS of PROFITS AND ITS EFFECT ON THE RATE OF PROFIT

This is a quick explanation of the difference in the relative and absolute rate of profit which I said I would provide in the comments section on Michael Robert’s website regarding his recent posting of new and improved global rates of profit.

“The low point in profits in Q2 2008 is associated with a fall in the mass of capital at the same time. If we were to adjust capital and profits to be of equal size, that 4% fall in the mass of capital would equate to an 80% fall”
When you refer here (and in other paragraphs) to the “mass of capital” you are referring, I take it, to the aggregate value, not the physical mass? There can be a connection but not always; for example locomotives can be scrapped, less oil can be produced, but such declines are need not be driven by declines in profits.
WTO reports trade in both volume and value terms, which is very helpful, but few organizations report both. Generally you wind up searching through transportation freight indexes to get the changes to the “technical composition” vs. the value composition.
Yes always values never volumes in this case. Volume figures are merely value figures adjusted for price changes.
